The title of Chapter 4 is The Cygents. I wonder what a cygent is. The big day has arrived. The babies are coming! How do the babies get out of their shell? I wonder if it is hard work for them. I am anxious to find out how many baby swans are born and what they look like. I hope they are all healthy!! Do you think Sam sees the babies hatching? Find out the answers to these questions and more in Chapter 4. Enjoy!

Chapter 4: The Cygents
January 30, 2007Chapter 3. The Visitor
January 26, 2007Hi! At the end of Chapter 2 we left the two trumpeter swans preparing a nest at the pond. The title of Chapter 3 is The Visitor. Do you think Sam is the visitor , or maybe it is his dad spying on Sam? I wonder if Sam see the swans or the swans see Sam – maybe both are the visitors.
Chapter Two
January 18, 2007Chapter2 describes the pond and all the animal life that live there, including the Trumpeter Swans. It is the time of year when many animals make their homes(nests) to begin making preparations for having a family. The descriptions in this chapter are very detailed and the sketches add so much. As you read this chapter, you will be delighted and entertained by the personality of the male swan(the cob). Happy Reading!
Chapter 2. The Pond
January 18, 2007Hi! When we left Sam at the end of Chapter 1 he was planning on going back to the pond he had discovered. I wonder if Sam is going to go to the pond with his Dad or alone. Do you think he might see the swans again. I think so, because one swan was sitting on a nest. Maybe there are eggs in the nest???? Enjoy Chapter 2 !

Chapter 1 “Sam”
January 3, 2007Hi, my name is Jan H. and I am one of the children’s librarians on staff at the library. Each week, I will pose some questions for you to think about as you read each chapter of “The Trumpet of the Swan.”
Chapter One is entitled “Sam.” I wonder, who is Sam and what is his connection to Louis, the trumpter swan? The illustration on the first page shows a boy walking through a swamp with binoculars around his neck. Could this be Sam and why does he have binoculars? If you read the beginning of the chapter it says that Sam is walking back to camp and he is wondering whether he should tell his father what he saw. If he told him, Sam thinks his father will want to go back to the pond with him. I’m curious, what do you think Sam saw and why doesn’t Sam want his father to come with him? Let’s read the chapter and find out!
